What are warning signs for suicide?
Most people who attempt or commit suicide do give some indication of their impending action.
Preoccupation with themes of death
Verbal expressions about suicide
Giving away important possessions
History of previous suicide attempts
Sudden interest in dangerous activities or uncharacteristic risk-taking
Depressed moodIncreased irritability and behavior problems
Changes in sleep and/or appetite patterns
Decline in school preformance
Use of alcohol or drugs
Increased social withdrawal
History of physical, mental, emotional or sexual abuse
History of learning disablilites combined with sense of failure
Frequent sleeping disorders or complaints
Loss of interest and pleasure in previously enjoyable activities
Inattention to daily hygiene
Rebellion, belligerence
Depression or grief following loss of emotionally supported "significant other" relationships
Sudden lifting of severe depression
Recent withdrawal from therapy or counseling
