General Assistance Medical Care Weekly Report: cuts threaten trauma and other services
September 25, 2009
As the only Level I trauma center for adults in the east metro and the only Level 1 trauma center for children in the upper Midwest, Regions provides care not offered at other hospitals such as trauma services for patients with the most serious and life threatening injuries. Regions is also nonprofit with a net margin of about one percent -- much smaller than Fortune 500 companies. The loss of $23 million a year in GAMC funding would wipe out that margin and could force Regions to make cuts in its critical care programs that serve all Minnesotans.

Story of the week: Tammy, 55 age3
After Tammy lost her job, she moved in with a family member while she searches for another job. When she came to the emergency department, she was experiencing severe chest pain. Doctors discovered that the pain was caused by a problem with her kidneys. Her current bill is more than $11,000. Without GAMC, she wouldn't be able to pay the bill or to continue to get care and pay for the medication she needs.
