HealthPartners Employee Assistance Program

HealthPartners Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a proven strategy for assisting employees and their families with personal and work-related problems that can and do affect their work performance. Whether personal or work-related, employee problems effect co-workers, the boss and staff often resulting in lower productivity and the potential for lost profits.

The Six 'E's

Employees are your most valuable asset, but the value of those assets can be diminished by personal problems, health issues and difficulties on-the-job. Employee personal problems result in absenteeism, lost productivity, termination and work place violence, which cost you time, profits, resources and more. The facts illustrate that employee problems can have a huge impact on your bottom line:

Evidence Statistics show that 10-15 percent of employees have severe personal problems, and these same employees account for 90% of absenteeism in your company. This means that your greatest asset–employees–could become your greatest liability.
Employees The performance of troubled employees is at least 35% below normal. Personal and interpersonal factors account for 65-80 percent of all terminations. The cost of terminating, hiring and training employees is high.
Expense Companies spend over 5 percent of their payroll on costs associated with absenteeism. Surveys show that the full costs of employee absence are more than four times total medical payments when the productivity lost from absence is added to wage replacement payments.
Employers Employers lose an estimated $52 billion each year from depression-related absenteeism and reduced productivity.
Environment Employees and supervisors are not qualified to solve many employees personal problems, yet often feel responsible when employees personal problems affect the job performance of others, leading to demoralization of management staff and employees.
External Influences Natural disasters, major accidents/injuries, workplace violence, reduction in workforce, and other unexpected incidents can affect many employees and cost thousands of dollars, mostly because employers don't have access to resources to quickly and thoroughly deal with these issues to mitigate or prevent further negative impact.

What is an EAP?

Employee assistance programs (EAPs) are worksite-based programs designed to identify and resolve productivity issues associated with employees. These issues may be triggered by personal issues, including but not limited to, health, marital, family, financial, alcohol, drug, legal, emotional, stress or other personal concerns.

Employees who have a resource for help and information are better equipped to deal with both workplace and personal issues. Easy-to-access information on a broad array of topics and someone to listen and offer guidance are the key features of Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs). Allowing employees to access information for free, on their own time, at their own pace can reduce the potential for expensive mental health claims. The EAP identifies and often solves employee concerns before they escalate to work place violence.

Why have an EAP?

EAPs help the individual and your organization by diagnosing, counseling and/or referring these employees to the appropriate help. EAPs are proven to reduce costs, both directly and indirectly:

  • Early identifier - Provides resources that often capture individuals with problems before the problems escalate or turn violent
  • Employee satisfier - Provides another perk for employees who are more satisfied with employers who offer these types of services
  • Safety net - Acts as a safety net by having resources ready-to-go should critical incidents arise that need immediate attention
  • Cost control - It's much cheaper to pay for an EAP program up front than costly behavioral health and medical claims on the back end
EAPs offer resources specific to employees and their dependents, as well as to managers and employers. These resources are offered in several convenient formats including print, telephone and online. As an added value, EAPs can provide additional services, including seminars, onsite consulting and utilization reporting for your management team.
