Mental illness impacts millions of people. And depression is the leading cause of disability. Treatment that works is available. But less than half will seek it. A main reason is the stigma associated with mental disorders.

The Facts:

  • One in four Americans experience a mental illness each year. These range in severity from anxiety to depression to schizophrenia.
  • Most people wait an average of 10 years before seeking treatment. Largely because of the stigma associated with mental illnesses.
  • 800,000 people take their lives every year.
  • Untreated mental illness costs the U.S. $100 trillion a year.
  • 70 to 90 percent of people who start treatment see improvement.

These statistics are some of the evidence that we need to do more.

Starting in 1949, the U.S. recognized May as Mental Health Month. Its goal is to raise awareness and educate the public. We are proud to support this effort.

What we are doing:

We are committed to mental health. That’s why we offer many options for services in addition to the mental health care provided by our clinics and hospitals.

  • The Make It OK campaign aims to change the misperceptions of mental illnesses. It encourages open conversations and education. Take the pledge to take a stand against stigma.
  • HeroCare serves members of the military and their families. It provides mental health programs to veterans related to their service.
  • Beating the Blues is an online program. It lets you go at your own pace to learn ways to better manage your mood, stress and anxiety.
  • Pet Therapy puts man’s best friend to work to help patients with mental health disorders. Studies show animals can help with stress, self-esteem and communication.
  • We partner with local efforts dedicated to mental health awareness. They include NAMI-MN and The Hilarious World of Depression podcast.

Together, we can help end the stigma surrounding mental illness.
