Memorial Day marks the beginning of summer for many people. And it’s common for that to mean barbecues and parties nearly every weekend. While those often include drinking alcohol, it’s important to provide social environments where it’s okay to not drink. This is especially true if you or someone else at the party is an expecting mother.

“There is no known safe amount of alcohol for pregnancy,” HealthPartners OB-GYN Adrienne Richardson, MD, said on a recent episode of the podcast Mom Enough. “That’s why we recommend that pregnant women avoid all alcohol. Not even a single glass can be considered safe.”

Unfortunately, some people disregard that recommendation and believe that alcohol is not dangerous for expecting mothers. In a 2015 study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 10.2 percent of pregnant women self-reported that they had drunk alcohol in the past month. But Dr. Richardson says alcohol use during pregnancy is likely even higher at 12 to 15 percent. And 3 to 5 percent of women continue to binge drink during pregnancy.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is a medical condition that affects an unborn child when the mother drinks. The fact is that this condition makes for a difficult start to life for babies who are born with it. They can have physical defects as well as brain-based disabilities, both of which lead to learning and behavior problems as they grow older.

So Dr. Richardson stresses: Make your summer fun and festive without being so focused on alcohol! Wondering how? We’ve collected and taste-tested 5 easy mocktail recipes from Momjunction that are a good place to start:
