Education and didactics
Education is one of the founding principles of TRIA Orthopedic Center and our fellowship program is the cornerstone of this. Our education program is designed to provide comprehensive training and exposure to develop well-rounded, skilled sports medicine surgeons. For specific benefit of the fellows, there are weekly didactic sessions covering orthopedic surgery and primary care sports medicine topics. There are also monthly journal clubs, case discussion conferences (including M & M), physical therapy and musculoskeletal radiology lectures/interactives. Throughout the year there are professional development interactives that cover topics of practice management. Fellows also attend local, regional and national meetings. Additionally, there will be opportunities for surgical skills and anatomy labs.
Surgical Skills Laboratory
Our on-site Surgical Skills laboratory provides a tremendous opportunity for fellows to gain knowledge in anatomy, procedure development and refinement, and innovative/scholarly work. At least seven labs are performed during the academic year. Typical labs performed include: ACL and multi-ligament reconstruction, knee osteotomy, shoulder and elbow arthroscopy, open shoulders procedures, including shoulder instability and arthroplasty.
Research
Our fellows will complete and be part of the entire process of a research project and an editorial article or book chapter as assigned by faculty. The fellow will meet with the research team upon arrival in August and select their project shortly thereafter. The fellow will provide regular updates on their project to the Institute and manager. Each fellow will present their work in July, at the Big10 Meeting at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Annual Conference. The manager of research, along with our research scientists and medical director, serve to facilitate research by the staff and others affiliated with TRIA. All are available to the fellows for consultation and guidance on study design, data management, statistical analysis, discussion, presentation and publication of research.
Physical/Occupational Therapy Conference
This is an educational opportunity for the fellows to gain knowledge and experience in the science of musculoskeletal rehabilitation. This series of interactive lectures focuses on the rehabilitative science of the orthopedic patient. Fellows gain experience in the basic science behind rehabilitation modalities, how to appropriately order or refer to a therapy specialist, typical rehabilitation protocols, and how to effectively communicate with a physical and occupational therapy specialists to best care for the patient. Licensed therapists will introduce and lead the conference, followed by an open discussion.
Musculoskeletal Radiology Conferences
This conference is an educational opportunity for the fellows to gain knowledge and experience in musculoskeletal imaging, including fundamental knowledge of MRI basic science, referrals (ordering imaging studies), and MRI interpretation. The fellows and the radiologists will bring interesting and complex cases for group discussion and interpretation.
Professional Development
Our Program offers an annual educational stipend for our fellows to attend local and national meetings.
