Remote work may have distinct advantages for both the employee and the company. Yet, at the same time, many challenges loom. Whereas flexible work arrangements may provide freedom to design a work-life balance that fits well with employee and family life and may contribute to a greater sense of job and life satisfaction, it also may keep employees from in-person and face-to face interactions that allow for teamwork and meaningful social interactions. Remote work can make connecting with others difficult and build a sense of social isolation and loneliness. The lack of connectedness can have significant detrimental impacts on productivity and worker performance. Hence, organizations should consider the ramifications of remote work as a strategic and integral part of their human resources and health and well-being strategies.
