Myasthenia gravis is a chronic (long-term) condition that causes muscle weakness and fatigue. It’s most commonly seen in younger women and older men. But it can affect anyone at any age.
Treatments are available for myasthenia gravis (MG) that can help control symptoms. If you’re diagnosed with MG, you and your care team will develop a plan together that addresses your symptoms and aims to improve your quality of life. That way, you can participate more fully in what you enjoy.
Basics of myasthenia gravis
MG is an autoimmune disease, which means your immune system mistakenly attacks healthy parts of your body. With MG, your muscles tend to get tired and weaken more quickly than usual. This leads to feeling fatigued and exhausted.
MG can affect any of your muscles. But the following are affected most often:
- Eyelids and the area around the eyes
- Facial muscles, including the jaw
- Neck muscles
- Arm or leg muscles
It’s not clear yet why some people get MG and others don’t.
