Medicare dental insurance

With built-in dental coverage, your Medicare plan already includes some dental benefits – you don’t have to do anything extra to get these benefits. Built-in dental benefits are usually for routine and preventive dental services. Your plan might provide an annual benefit maximum to use toward these services. Or it could be more traditional insurance coverage with copays or coinsurance.

If your Medicare plan offers supplemental dental coverage, you can choose to add extra dental coverage for an additional monthly premium. These supplemental benefits usually cover comprehensive dental services, like crowns, fillings and more. Adding supplemental dental coverage might round out the dental coverage your plan already includes. Or it might add coverage to a plan that doesn’t include these benefits.

Whether you’re considering a Medicare plan with built-in or supplemental dental coverage, it’s always a good idea to check the details of the plan you’re interested in to get the most accurate information and confirm what’s covered.

At HealthPartners, supplemental dental coverage is an add-on. First, you’ll need to sign up for one of our Medicare plans that offers supplemental dental coverage (alongside, of course, the medical perks and benefits you’re looking for). Then, you can add optional dental coverage during the enrollment process.

Medicare enrollment periods include:

• Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) when you turn 65
• The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) every year from October 15 through December 7, when you can switch Medicare plans
• Certain other enrollment periods if you sign up for Medicare after you turn 65, have a Medicare Advantage plan or have a special circumstance

If you signed up for one of our Medicare Advantage plans that offers supplemental dental coverage but didn’t add it when you first enrolled, you can still add it during AEP or during our enrollment period for optional supplemental benefits.
