Your health plan has your back while you travel

When traveling, the only thing you should worry about is squeezing in all the sights. But the unexpected can happen, and it’s best to be prepared. As a HealthPartners member, you’ll be able to get the help you need while away from home.

With resources like Virtuwell 1 and our no-cost 24/7 nurse line, you can reach us from anywhere. We’ve also partnered with Assist America® to make sure you have support if you’re more than 100 miles from home or traveling internationally.2

HealthPartners can provide travel support before and during your trip. Learn more below about your plan, travel medicine, Virtuwell and how to contact a nurse.

As you prepare for your trip, make sure to review your plan details regarding travel. Many of our networks include providers across the United States who can help you stay healthy – sign in to search your network.

It’s also a good idea to review your coverage so you understand what costs you can expect for in- and out-of-network care. But remember that with most plans, you’re always covered for emergency care, no matter where you are.3 You can sign in to review your coverage.

Visiting a travel medicine clinic before you take off can help you stay healthy wherever your journey takes you. Travel medicine specialists use the latest international health guidelines to get you the vaccines, medicines and information you need, no matter where you’re headed. You can sign in to review your coverage.

Our online clinic Virtuwell helps you get care anywhere. 1 Virtuwell can treat 60+ common conditions – just answer a quick online survey about your symptoms and get a customized treatment plan (including prescriptions, if needed). With many HealthPartners plans, there’s no cost to you.

It can help to talk with someone directly about your symptoms. We have nurses available 24/7 at our CareLine to provide guidance on what to do about that nagging cough, high fever or unexplained rash. There’s no cost to get your questions answered and have help deciding whether you should see a doctor.

Call the number on the back of your member ID card or 800-551-0859 to talk with a nurse anytime.

International travel coverage with your HealthPartners health insurance

When you’re far away from home, your HealthPartners plan can help you get needed care:

    • Most plans cover international emergency care.3
    • Other health care abroad is covered under any out-of-network benefits you have. Not all plans include out-of-network coverage.3

Before you travel overseas, sign in to review your coverage and see how your plan covers emergency and out-of-network care abroad. If you do get care, remember to save all your paperwork and receipts. You’ll need to include these to submit a claim to get reimbursed according to your plan benefits.

Regardless of what kind of coverage you have, you can use Assist America for travel assistance any time you’re more than 100 miles from home. Assist America’s services include helping you find a doctor or clinic near you, anywhere in the world.

3All HealthPartners non-Medicare plans cover worldwide emergency care at in-network levels. All HealthPartners Medicare plans cover U.S. emergency care at in-network levels, and most (but not all) HealthPartners Medicare plans also cover international emergency care under a separate benefit. You can sign in to review your coverage. Regardless of your plan’s emergency care coverage, follow-up, non-emergency care away from your plan’s service area may be out of network or, for some plans, not covered; before you begin this kind of care, we recommend checking your plan’s network and coverage. If you have questions about your specific plan or situation, contact Member Services.
