ALS basics
Your central nervous system controls how you walk, speak, eat, breathe and more. It does this by sending signals from your brain to your motor neurons. Motor neurons are nerve cells that control your muscles.
ALS causes damage to your motor neurons. Your brain can’t communicate as well through damaged neurons, so affected muscles don’t work as well. Over time, these underused muscles become weaker and smaller.
Doctors have found that some forms of ALS are passed down from parents to children. But they don’t yet know what causes other types of ALS. Several treatments can help slow ALS and manage related health issues.
