Scleroderma basics
The protein collagen is present throughout your body, especially in your skin. Collagen is the main component in connective tissue. This tissue supports your organs and other parts of your body.
When you have scleroderma, your immune system mistakenly triggers your body to produce too much collagen. Your skin and tissues then become thicker and harder than normal. It’s not yet known what causes scleroderma. But scientists think it’s probably due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
There are two types of scleroderma:
- Localized scleroderma – This more common type affects the skin and tissue under the skin. It can result in skin hardening, inflammation and patches that feel waxy. It tends to affect skin on your chest, limbs, hands and fingers, feet and toes, and abdomen.
- Systemic sclerosis – This less common type affects connective tissue in both the skin and other organs. The heart, kidneys, lungs and digestive system may be affected. This can cause problems across your body.
