Sleep disorder basics

Good, quality sleep is essential for your body. Among other benefits, sleep can help improve brain health and performance, mood, and your physical well-being.

But with a sleep disorder, your body doesn’t get all the sleep benefits it should. Disorders might affect how well you sleep, when you fall asleep or how long you sleep. Common sleep disorders include:

  • Insomnia – Frequent problems with falling or staying asleep
  • Sleep apnea – A breathing issue that occurs during sleep
  • Restless legs syndrome – An urge to move your legs, or a prickling or tingling sensation, that makes it hard to sleep
  • Circadian rhythm disorders – When your body’s internal clock is out of sync with your environment, like with shift work sleep disorder
  • Hypersomnia – Excessive daytime sleepiness, even if you got enough overnight sleep
  • Parasomnia – Where your brain is partially awake during sleep, causing sleepwalking, night terrors or similar sleep-related problems

Sleep problems can have many causes, from noises that keep you awake to overthinking about your day. But they may also be a sign of a physical or mental health problem. So it’s important to address sleep problems whenever they become more than occasional.
