Previous published reports indicate that health information exchange (HIE) can help emergency physicians manage patients when there is an information deficit. These studies are often based on analysis of claims but do not explore the types of information needed and the direct effect of that information on subsequent emergency department (ED) patient care decisions made by emergency physicians. This study aimed to understand the utility of HIE in the ED by interviewing providers about information retrieved and subsequent decisions made after requesting information from a HIE network.
